MOSCOW (RIA Novosti) – The reigning king of 3-D cinema, filmmaker James Cameron, has persuaded NASA to equip its Mars Curiosity rover with a 3-D camera, the Pasadena Star News reported.
The “Avatar” director met with NASA administrator Charles Bolden in a one-on-one meeting back in January and convinced the space agency to buy a 3-D camera.
“He [Bolden] actually was really open to the idea,” Cameron said. “Our first meeting went very well.”
The new 3-D camera is being built at San Diego-based Malin Space Science Systems, but the Curiosity team isn’t sure the new camera will be ready in time. Curiosity is destined to be launched to the Red Planet in 2011.
The roaring success of James Cameron’s movie Avatar launched cinema into a new dimension. The sci-fi blockbuster, shot in 3D, has surpassed Titanic to become the highest grossing film of all time.
